Types of ImplantsThe two most popular types of implants used in augmentation are the saline-filled implant and the silicone gel-filled implant.Saline-filled implants can be filled during surgery and therefore can fit through smaller incisions. These implants are also less expensive, but may feel less natural in thin patients. The implants can be adjusted in surgery for breast asymmetry more easily than gels. They last about as long as gels and may look similar. The primary disadvantage is how they may feel. Silicone gel-filled implants feel more natural in thin patients, wrinkle and ripple less often, and pose a lower risk of downward displacement. Disadvantages of silicone gel-filled implants include their higher cost, the larger incisions required to insert the implant, and their tendency to result in slightly more capsular contractures. Generally larger augmentations are more easily done with salines because they are inflated after insertion. What to ExpectThe augmentation procedure generally involves making a1.5 inch incision at either below the breast or under the areola through which the implant is placed above or beneath the pectoral muscles. A comprehensive consultation will give you and Dr. Stark a chance to discuss your particular desires, including the size, shape, and type of implant you prefer and your options for its placement. As the incisions heal, scarring will occur, and you may experience soreness, fatigue, or bruising. Eventually, the scars should fade dramatically, and Dr. Stark can position the incisions so that they are as inconspicuous as possible. Within a few weeks of surgery, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to gauge your recovery; however, full recuperation generally takes a month or longer. CandidacySome of the more specific conditions that drive patients to seek breast augmentation include:
BenefitsMany of the women who have undergone breast augmentation feel more pleased with their appearance, and have a better body image. Recognizing that a previously disproportionate, aged, or unshapely figure can be transformed is empowering. All goals have to be looked at realistically. Augmentation alone will not lift the breasts, and some desires for a particular size and shape are not possible to achieve.RisksAs with any medical procedure, there are some risks associated with breast surgery. Infection, significant bleeding, nipple numbness are rare but possible. Post operative asymmetries should be less, but may still exist. And remember, no implants will last forever!Contact UsIf you are looking to explore the possibilities that breast augmentation can offer, please contact our Lakeland office to schedule a consultation today. Rest assured that Dr. Stark can provide the services you need.Breast EnlargementBy inserting an implant behind each breast, surgeons are able to increase a woman's bustline by one or more bra cup sizes. If you're considering breast augmentation, this will give you a basic understanding of the procedure--when it can help, how it's performed, and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please ask your surgeon if there is anything you don't understand about the procedure.
